India blocks foreign gay couples from surrogacy

150 150 Surrogacy in Russia and Abroad

Ministry of Internal Affairs of India has issued ??recommendations that will put an end to the dreams of many gay couples to become parents through surrogacy in India. The guidelines say that only couples consisting of a man and a woman, married for at least two years, will have access to surrogacy, reports the newspaper Times of India.

MIA notes that foreigners coming to India in search of surrogate mothers will no longer be able to enter using tourist visas. If they meet the criteria set by the Ministry, they will be given a “medical visa”.

In recent years, many gay couples from Europe, the U.S. and Australia have become parents through surrogacy in India. They used the fact that the laws were rather vague, and the cost of such services is much lower than in the West.
