The main task of any progressive state is to support in every way the formation of a healthy, viable and happy family. Childlessness is a great source of stress for a barren family, which may jeopardize its integrity, as well as reduce the motivation and the possibility of full self-realization of people during their stay in a social and professional environment.

The Liberal Party of Canada is considering exploring new frontiers and expanding the territory of reproductive law. We are talking about a possible change in the legal norms that allow surrogate mothers and sperm donors to legally receive remuneration for their services.

Party activists believe that a broad public discussion of this problem is needed, since Canada’s current Human Reproduction Act must keep up with modern realities, to meet the interests of families with no children, single mothers and women planning to have children in the future. At the same time, the assertion that children are more likely the right of citizens rather than a gift is fundamental, and the government should take measures to ensure that those who do not want to have children have the right to terminate the pregnancy, and those who want to have children could get the opportunity to exercise this right at any cost, regardless of the value of the associated costs, whether financial or moral and ethical expenses.

Numerous studies show how much tragic and life-destroying stories have happened in people’s lives in recent years. Surrogate mothers are forced to deal with biological mothers in court, often requiring surrogate mothers to terminate the pregnancy, which they believe is not as they expected, which may affect the health of the expected child.

The chairman of the committee of the House of Commons believes that the restrictions on trafficking and reproduction are unfair. The current Human Reproduction Act reads as follows: “The use of the reproductive capabilities of children, women and men for commercial gain is strictly prohibited for reasons of health and ethics.” Canadian liberals declare this law paternalistic.

The Liberal Women’s Assembly supports the view that “help in breeding people is one of the areas of law where we continue to criminalize women’s bodies,” without explaining why commercializing our bodies is the same thing as criminalizing them.

Professor of bioethics and philosophy, Françoise Baylis, of Dalhaus University, claims that selling sperm and eggs is a “commodification of the human body” and, as a result, can lead to exploitation and even coercion.

The fact is that, in contrast to the calls of the liberals, conservatives and social democrats approach the problem with extreme caution, declaring that they will not determine their position on expanding the area of enforcement of reproductive technologies until they know what ordinary Canadians think about this. This seems rather typical, since it is always helpful to keep ethical considerations in the spotlight. In the meantime, there is a danger that the topic of ethics of the commercialization of the human body will slide from constructive discussion to cheap rhetoric about “criminalized structures” and “reproductive rights”.
